Greek and Latin roots are the meaning-carrying parts inside academic English words, like bio in biology or port in transport. They matter because learning a handful of them gives students a way to unpack words they were never taught, instead of skipping them. A root holds a word’s core meaning, even though it usually can’t stand alone.
Prefixes and suffixes are meaningful word parts that attach to a base word to change its meaning, its function, or both. They give students a strategy for reading thousands of words they’ve never been directly taught, because the meaning is built into the parts.
Word families are groups of words that share a common base word or root and are related in meaning. In structured literacy, word families are morphological: they’re built from shared meaningful parts, not shared sounds.
A compound word is a word made of two or more smaller words that can each stand on their own, joined to create a new meaning. Sunflower. Butterfly. Backpack. Compound words matter because they’re the first place students see that words are built from meaningful parts: the insight every later morphology skill depends on.
A morpheme is the smallest unit of meaning in a word. Not the smallest unit of sound; that’s a phoneme. Not the smallest pronounceable chunk; that’s a syllable. But morphemes help them understand long words, and that’s a different skill entirely.
