Prior Knowledge: What It Is and Why It Decides What Students Understand

Two students sat across from each other during partner reading, working through the same passage about the American Revolution. The first read his section aloud accurately, then tried to retell it: “They were fighting about… taxes? And they wanted to be free.” His partner read her section and retold it without a hitch. She named the Stamp Act, connected it to the colonists’ anger, and predicted what would come next.

Here is what makes that moment worth stopping on. Their decoding and vocabulary were comparable. She was not a “better reader” in any structural sense. The difference was prior knowledge, what each child already knew about that topic before reading a word of it.

Her family read historical fiction at home; she’d walked through a Colonial Williamsburg reenactment over the summer. She came in with a mental model for this period, somewhere to put each new fact. He came in with an empty room and nowhere to put the furniture.

While my official title was Reading Interventionist, I was also the person other teachers pulled aside to talk through a reader who wasn’t adding up. Once you see this pattern, you see it everywhere. So let’s look at what prior knowledge is, how it differs from background knowledge, and the mechanism underneath that sends two capable readers to such different places on the same page.

What Prior Knowledge Actually Means

Prior knowledge is the specific slice of what a reader already knows that is relevant to the text in front of them. It matters because comprehension is an act of connection: when the relevant knowledge is there, new information has somewhere to attach, and when it isn’t, comprehension stalls, no matter how strong the reader’s decoding skills are.

People use prior knowledge and background knowledge interchangeably, and usually that’s harmless. But there is a useful distinction underneath. Background knowledge is the broad term: the entire store a reader has built over a lifetime. Prior knowledge is narrower, the part of that store relevant to this passage, right now. A child can have a deep store overall and still have almost no prior knowledge for the specific text on their desk this morning.

The distinction isn’t pedantic. It is the difference between asking “is this child a strong reader?” and “does this child know enough about this topic to read this text well?”

What Is Schema in Reading?

To understand why prior knowledge carries so much power, it helps to know the mechanism underneath it: schema.

A schema is an organized mental structure for a topic, the network of related ideas, vocabulary, and experiences a reader has filed together. When you ask what is schema in reading, this is the heart of it: a schema is the framework new information gets connected to. A reader with a rich schema can slot an incoming fact into an existing structure, which frees up working memory to actually think about the text instead of holding every loose detail in place. A reader with no schema carries each new fact with nothing to attach it to, and working memory fills up fast.

This is the room and the furniture again. The student with a developed schema for the American Revolution walks in with the room already built, a place for the Stamp Act to go the moment it appears. The student without one walks in carrying furniture with nowhere to set it down. Both decoded the passage; only one had a structure ready to receive what it said. Daniel Willingham, a cognitive scientist, puts it plainly: knowledge lets readers chunk new information and fill in what the author left unsaid, which is most of what comprehension requires.

Why Prior Knowledge Matters for Reading

When prior knowledge is missing, the breakdown looks exactly like a comprehension problem. The student decodes accurately and still cannot tell you what the text meant. It is easy to read that as a weak comprehension skill and reach for more strategy instruction. Often that is the wrong diagnosis. The reader didn’t lack a skill. They lacked the knowledge the text assumed.

The research demonstration teachers cite most often makes this concrete. In a well-known 1988 study, Donna Recht and Lauren Leslie had junior-high students read a passage about a baseball game and act it out on a model field, after sorting them by reading ability and by how much they knew about baseball. The result that should give every reading teacher pause: weak readers who knew baseball outperformed strong readers who didn’t. Topic knowledge mattered more than measured reading skill (Recht & Leslie, 1988, Journal of Educational Psychology, paywalled).

I want to be honest about why so many of us never learned to look for this. Most of us were trained to teach comprehension as a bundle of transferable strategies, find the main idea, make an inference, as if those skills worked on any text regardless of what the reader knew. Building knowledge wasn’t framed as reading instruction at all. That was a gap in the training itself, not a failure of any teacher.

What This Looks Like in a Classroom

You can see prior knowledge in a contrast between two readers, the way those partner readers showed it. You can also see it in a single student across a week. The child who is animated during a unit on a topic she knows, then flat and confused when the unit shifts to one she doesn’t, is not an inconsistent reader. Her comprehension is tracking, faithfully, with how much she brought to each text.

I saw this clearly years ago. A fifth-grade teacher mentioned over lunch that her class was reading The Night Diary, the novel set during the 1947 Partition of India. Most of her students could follow the story and feel the protagonist’s struggle. But two students in the class were from Indian families, and they comprehended and connected on another level entirely. They weren’t stronger readers than their classmates; they walked in already knowing the world the story lived in, so the book had somewhere to land for them in a way it didn’t for everyone else.

What that teacher did next is the part I still think about. She invited one of those students’ parents in, so the rest of the class could ask what it was like to grow up in India. She was, in effect, handing the other students a bit of the knowledge two of them already had.

That move, supplying the knowledge a text needs right before students read, is its own skill and deserves more than a mention here. The point that comes first is simpler: you can’t surface knowledge a student has never built, and you can’t assume it’s there just because the reading level says it should be.

One Thing People Get Wrong

The most common misconception is that prior knowledge, background knowledge, and schema are three words for the same thing. They overlap, but collapsing them hides the instructional point. Keeping them distinct lets you ask the more useful question when a reader struggles: was the knowledge this passage assumed actually there? That points somewhere completely different from “this child needs comprehension support.”

What This Means for Your Teaching

Here is one shift to try this week, and it costs nothing. When a student’s comprehension looks uneven, strong on some texts, weak on others of similar difficulty, pause before you log it as a comprehension problem. Ask one question instead: does this student’s comprehension track with how familiar the topic is? If a reader understands well on the topics they know and struggles on the ones they don’t, you may be looking at a knowledge gap wearing a comprehension problem’s clothes. Those two call for completely different responses.

I’ll name the gap honestly, because it is the bridge to everything else in this cluster. Understanding what prior knowledge is and being equipped to build and activate it well are different things. Knowing the gap exists doesn’t yet tell you how to surface what students know before a text, or how to grow that knowledge over time. That work is doable, and it’s what the rest of this cluster takes on.

What you love about teaching reading is not at risk here. None of this asks you to give up the books or the discussions. It asks you to make sure the knowledge is there, so students can meet those books on equal footing.
