What Is Background Knowledge? (And Why It Decides What Kids Comprehend)

I gave a third grader named Miguel a reading comprehension assessment one fall, and his scores made no sense.

It was a standard four-passage assessment: a narrative about a boy and his dog, an informational passage about baseball, one about the water cycle, and one about the American Revolution. Isaac scored 100% on baseball. He scored 80% on the narrative. Then he scored 30% on the water cycle and 20% on the American Revolution. His average landed around 57%, just under benchmark, the kind of number that gets a student flagged for “comprehension support” and moved along.

But the average was hiding the actual story. As the Academic Coach responsible for the reading data across our K–5 building, I’d learned to be suspicious of an average that wide, so I went back to the passage-level data. I pulled the water cycle passage and read it myself.

The vocabulary wasn’t harder than the baseball passage. The sentences were comparable. The Lexile levels were within fifty points of each other. Same difficulty, same student, same morning, and a sixty-point swing in comprehension.

Background knowledge, what a reader already knows about a topic before they begin reading, turned out to be the difference between Miguel understanding a text and Miguel sinking under one. And once you see it in a student like Miguel, you start seeing it everywhere.

What Is Background Knowledge?

Background knowledge is everything a reader already knows about a topic before reading a word about it. It matters because comprehension is not a freestanding skill: a reader understands a passage in direct proportion to how much they already know about what it describes. The same student can comprehend well on a familiar topic and fall apart on an unfamiliar one.

When teachers search what is background knowledge, this is the piece that usually gets left out: it isn’t a “nice to have” that makes reading a little richer. It is one of the load-bearing components of whether comprehension happens at all.

Here is the part worth holding onto from the start. There are really two different jobs hiding inside “background knowledge,” and they are not the same work:

  • Building background knowledge means growing the storehouse over time, so a student knows more about the world walking into more texts.
  • Activating background knowledge means helping a student connect what they already know to the specific text in front of them, right now, before they read it.

A teacher can be excellent at one and never touch the other. That build-versus-activate distinction is the hinge the whole topic turns on.

Background Knowledge, Prior Knowledge, and Schema: What’s the Difference?

These three terms get used interchangeably, and most of the time that’s harmless. But they describe slightly different things, and seeing the distinction makes the rest of the research click into place.

Background knowledge is the broad term: the total store of what a reader knows about the world, accumulated over a lifetime of experiences, conversations, and reading.

Prior knowledge is usually used a little more narrowly. It’s the specific slice of background knowledge a reader brings to a particular text. When you ask students what they already know about volcanoes before reading a passage about volcanoes, you’re tapping their prior knowledge. Schema is the structure underneath both: the mental file folder where related knowledge is organized. A student with a well-developed schema for “the ocean” has a folder that holds tides, waves, salt water, fish, currents, and the words that go with them. New information about the ocean has somewhere to go. A student with no ocean schema has to hold every new fact loose, with nothing to attach it to.

You don’t need to teach those three words to your students, and you don’t need to keep them perfectly separate in your own head every day. What matters is the shared idea underneath all three: reading comprehension is not just about the text on the page. It’s about the knowledge the reader carries to it. The text supplies maybe half the meaning. The reader supplies the rest.

Why Background Knowledge Matters for Reading

Background knowledge matters because comprehension is an act of connection. A reader takes the words on the page and links them to what they already know, and where there’s nothing to link to, comprehension stalls, no matter how strong the reader’s skills are. This is why a fluent decoder can read every word of a passage accurately and still have no idea what it meant.

The cognitive science here is clear, and Daniel Willingham lays it out plainly in his article “How Knowledge Helps”. Working memory, the mental space where we hold and process what we’re reading, is small and easily overwhelmed. When a reader already knows a lot about a topic, they can “chunk” incoming information into larger, familiar units, which frees up working memory to actually think about the text.

When a reader knows nothing, every unfamiliar term eats up that limited space, and there’s nothing left for understanding. Knowledge also lets readers fill in what the author left unsaid, the inferences good writing assumes you can make. A text about a baseball game never explains what an inning is. It doesn’t have to, if you already know.

The research demonstration teachers cite most often makes this concrete. In a now-famous 1988 study, Donna Recht and Lauren Leslie had junior high students read a passage about a baseball game and then act it out on a model field. They had sorted the students two ways: by reading ability and by how much they knew about baseball.

The result that should give every reading teacher pause is that students who were weak readers but knew baseball outperformed strong readers who didn’t. Knowledge of the topic mattered more than measured reading skill (Recht & Leslie, 1988, Journal of Educational Psychology, paywalled). That is Miguel, years before I met him, sitting in someone else’s data set.

I want to be honest about why so many of us never learned to look for this. Most of us were trained in an approach to reading where comprehension was taught as a bundle of transferable strategies (find the main idea, make an inference, visualize) as if those skills could be applied to any text regardless of what the reader knew. Building knowledge wasn’t framed as reading instruction at all. That wasn’t a failure of any individual teacher. It was a gap in the training itself, and naming it is the first step to teaching around it.

Where Background Knowledge Fits in the Science of Reading

Background knowledge isn’t a side topic in the science of reading. It sits inside the two frameworks that organize how we understand skilled reading.

The Simple View of Reading says that reading comprehension is the product of two things: word recognition (decoding) and language comprehension. Background knowledge lives squarely on the language comprehension side. A student can have flawless decoding and still land at near-zero comprehension if the language comprehension side, including the knowledge the text assumes, isn’t there. That’s Miguel on the water cycle passage: decoding intact, comprehension gone.

Scarborough’s Reading Rope zooms in on that language comprehension strand and shows what it’s actually made of. Background knowledge is one of the named strands woven into skilled reading, right alongside vocabulary, language structures, verbal reasoning, and literacy knowledge. Scarborough’s point is that these reading skills have to braid together. Strengthen the decoding strands all you want, but if the background knowledge strand is thin, the rope that produces comprehension is still weak at that spot.

Both frameworks say the same thing in different shapes: decoding is necessary and not sufficient. A child has to be able to read the words and know enough about the world the words describe. When comprehension breaks and the decoding is solid, background knowledge is one of the first places to look.

Building vs. Activating Background Knowledge

Building and activating are two different jobs, and confusing them is one of the most common ways good intentions miss the mark.

Building background knowledge is the long game

Building means deliberately growing what students know about the world over weeks, months, and years, through content-rich science and social studies, read-alouds of texts above students’ own reading level, and staying on a topic long enough for knowledge to accumulate.

It’s slow, cumulative work, and it’s the single most powerful lever we have for long-term comprehension. It’s also the work that gets squeezed out first when the schedule tightens. Activating background knowledge is the right-now move

Activating means surfacing what students already know, or quickly supplying what they’re missing, right before they read a specific text, so the knowledge is live when they need it. A two-minute conversation, a short video, three pre-taught vocabulary words with pictures: these don’t grow the storehouse permanently, but they hand the reader the specific key today’s passage requires.

The reason the distinction matters: activating only works if there’s something there to activate. You can’t surface knowledge a student has never built. And building, on its own, doesn’t guarantee a student will connect that knowledge to the text in front of them without a nudge. Most strong readers get both kinds of support, often invisibly. Common Questions About Background Knowledge

Isn’t background knowledge just vocabulary?

They’re deeply connected, but they’re not the same. Vocabulary is knowing what individual words mean. Background knowledge is understanding the world those words describe. You can know the dictionary definition of “evaporation” and still not understand a water cycle passage if you have no mental model of how water moves through the environment. Vocabulary and knowledge grow together, but knowledge is the larger structure the words hang on.

Won’t kids just pick this up on their own?

Some kids will: the ones who arrive at school with rich knowledge already built at home, through travel, books, museums, and dinner-table conversation. That’s exactly the problem. Left to chance, background knowledge tracks family circumstance, and the gap between students who have it and students who don’t widens every year. School is the one place that gap can be deliberately closed, which is why building knowledge is fundamentally an equity issue, not an enrichment one.

Does this mean I should stop teaching skills?

No. Decoding instruction, fluency work, comprehension strategies: all of it still matters. Background knowledge doesn’t replace any of it. It’s the thing that makes the rest pay off. A student needs to decode the words and know something about what they’re reading. This is “and,” not “instead of.”

What This Means for Your Teaching

Here’s the one shift I’d ask you to try this week, and it costs nothing: when a student’s comprehension scores look inconsistent, stop reading the average and start reading the passage-level data. Ask one question. Does this student’s comprehension track with how familiar the topic is?

If a student comprehends well on the topics they know and falls apart on the ones they don’t, you may not be looking at a comprehension problem at all. You may be looking at a knowledge problem wearing a comprehension problem’s clothes. And those two things call for completely different responses.

I watched this play out with a fifth-grade teacher I was coaching. We co-planned a careful three-lesson sequence around one focal text, and she asked me to observe the final lesson, the one where students did the real comprehension work. She taught it beautifully. And the students still stumbled, even on the more direct questions.

Afterward I asked what they’d studied about colonial America, since the text leaned on it heavily. “Nothing,” she said. “We don’t get to that unit until November.” The lesson wasn’t the problem. The instruction wasn’t the problem. The text assumed knowledge the curriculum hadn’t built yet, and no amount of comprehension-strategy skill was going to close that gap on a Tuesday.

I’ll say this plainly, because it’s the honest bridge to everything else in this cluster: understanding why background knowledge matters is not the same as being equipped to build it and activate it well. Knowing the gap exists doesn’t tell you how to sequence content over a year, how to activate prior knowledge in two minutes before a text, or which pre-reading moves actually work.
