The Frayer Model for Vocabulary: How the Non-Examples Box Reveals What Students Don’t Know

A fourth grader named Priya sat across from me with a Frayer Model vocabulary template and the word deliberate. She wrote the definition without pausing: “when you do something on purpose.” Characteristics, easy. Examples, easy. She listed three. Then she got to the non-examples box, and she stopped. Pencil up. A long, quiet moment. “I don’t… what goes here?” she finally asked.

Here was a girl who could use deliberate in a sentence, who read above grade level, who nobody had ever flagged. The moment she had to say what the word wasn’t, she had nothing. She knew the word from the inside only. No one had ever asked her to find its edges.

That stall is the whole reason this tool earns a place in your week. As an Academic Coach working with K–5 teachers, I’ve watched the Frayer Model surface, in about ninety seconds, the shallow word knowledge that meaning-based assessments miss entirely. This post is about how to run it, and how to read what students give you when you do.

What the Frayer Model Looks Like When It’s Working

The Frayer Model is a vocabulary graphic organizer that surrounds a target word with four boxes, definition, characteristics, examples, and non-examples, so students map a word’s full boundaries instead of just its meaning. It matters because knowing a word deeply means knowing what it isn’t as much as what it is, and that’s exactly the edge most vocabulary instruction skips.

You already know how to teach a word. You give a kid-friendly explanation, use it in context, and check that students can repeat it back. This tool doesn’t replace any of that. It adds one thing: a structure that forces students to walk all the way around a word instead of just touching the front of it.

The template is four boxes around a target word: definition, characteristics, examples, and non-examples. Students fill in all four. That’s the whole tool.

Here’s what it looks like alive. Back to Priya and deliberate. Once I told her a non-example was something that wasn’t deliberate, she thought, then tried: “An accident?” Yes. “Tripping?” Yes. And right there, her face changed. Until that second, she had never thought about what stood outside the word. She could use it. She couldn’t bound it.

That gap between using a word and owning it is exactly what Isabel Beck describes in Bringing Words to Life: knowing a word isn’t all-or-nothing, and the goal of strong instruction is depth, not a memorized definition. The four boxes make that depth visible. You’re not adding a new philosophy. You’re giving the words you already teach a place to show you how well your students actually hold them.

How to Run the Frayer Model Vocabulary Routine in Four Steps

Here’s the routine, start to finish.

1. Pick a word worth the time. Not every word needs four boxes. Reach for a Tier 2 word, a high-utility word that shows up across texts but rarely in casual talk, like deliberate, contradict, or reluctant. These are the words students half-know, which makes them perfect for this tool.

2. Give the explanation first. Before students touch the template, give them a student-friendly explanation of the word, the way you always would. This builds depth on a word you’ve introduced; it isn’t a cold-guessing game from four empty boxes.

3. Model one box at a time, then release. Fill in the definition together. Then characteristics. Then examples. Go slowly, thinking aloud, before students try on their own. The non-examples box is the one most students have never been asked to do, so model that one most carefully: “a non-example is something that is not this word.”

4. Watch which box they run to. This is the part most teachers skip, and it’s where the diagnostic gold sits. The Frayer Model works because of how depth of word knowledge develops. What You’ll Notice When It’s Working

Once you run this regularly, you’ll start watching the how, not just the answer, the way you’d look at a student’s math work to see where the thinking broke down. The completed boxes matter less than the road the student took to fill them.

The clearest signal is the one I see most often as a coach: students pull hard toward either the definition box or the non-example box first, and whichever one they’re drawn to, the opposite box is usually where they stall. The student who races to the definition freezes when it’s time to say what the word isn’t.

That was Priya. The student who jumps straight to non-examples (“it’s not sad, it’s not boring“) can struggle to pin down what the word actually means. Once you see that pattern a few times, you stop reading a stalled box as a kid who didn’t try. You start reading it as a map of where that child’s word knowledge is thin.

That changes what you do next. A student stuck on non-examples doesn’t need the definition re-explained. She needs a contrast: “Is whispering deliberate? Is sneezing?” A student stuck on the definition needs the core meaning firmed up before the edges will make sense. The box they avoid tells you which one to teach.

You’ll also notice the talk getting richer. When a student offers a non-example that’s almost right, like “tripping” for deliberate, the conversation that follows is real vocabulary work, worth more than a perfectly completed worksheet.

Start Here This Week

Pick one Tier 2 word you’re already teaching. Draw four boxes on chart paper or a whiteboard. You don’t need a special template, a vocabulary program, or pre-made printables to do this. Fill in the first three boxes with your class, then sit in the non-examples box together and see what happens.

The first time you do this, you’re not performing a perfect lesson. You’re finding out what your students actually know: which box they run to, which one they avoid, where the thin spots are. A “wrong” non-example isn’t a problem to fix on the spot. It’s the most useful thing that can happen, because it shows you exactly where to teach next.

Try it with one word. Then watch the boxes.
